about

It's always great fun (for the ears) putting together these compilations and I feel the latest one definitely showcases what Tru Thoughts as a label stands for. The variety of music covered on the two CDs is wide, but is definitely all connected with a musical, creative and soulful force. As a record label we often find that journalists and some radio stations look to pigeonhole music, which is something we try to avoid. The individual genres of music that certain people have assigned to Tru Thoughts as a label include Chill, Acid Jazz, Broken Beat, Nu Jazz, Jazz, Trip Hop, Big Beat, Beats, Funk and World....one listen to this compilation would mean having to add quite a few more genres to the list!

This compilation starts with Lizzy Parks (a song that could be a theme tune for a James Bond movie with its big, orchestrated strings and brass section) and ends with Redeyes delivering an Afro influenced Drum and Bass stomper, with a great variety of music connecting the sonic journey between them. This selection finds the future sounds of Hint, Milez Benjiman, Domu and Bassnectar, alongside the authentic flavour of New Orleans with Hot 8 Brass Band; the sound of strictly live music from The Bamboos, Flowering Inferno, and TM Juke And The Jack Baker Trio, alongside the wonderful, soulful voices of Kinny, Lizzy Parks and Kathrin deBoer of Belleruche.

The first CD is more geared towards the listening experience, highlighted by TrusMe's deep disco remix of Belleruche and Saravah Soul's Brazilian funk anthem with a message. For the first time on the Shapes series we have a second CD that is specifically directed towards DJs and clubbers, which includes a previously unreleased Quantic track, recorded between the ‘Apricot Morning’ and ‘Mishaps Happening’ albums, alongside Bonobo's club centric alias Barakas and Bullion's tough beat orientated remix of Natural Self. - Robert Luis
